Report commercial or industrial noise

Let us know about excessive noise from building, construction, commercial or industrial work.
Last updated on: 28 May 2025
Noise from building and construction work can be considered a nuisance. If noise is bothering you, you can contact us any time, day or night.
In New Zealand we have Construction Noise Standards which limits noise levels and times of operation, depending on certain situations.
Where equipment such as pumps, compressors or other commercial activity disturbs residents, our District Plan stipulates maximum allowed noise levels, depending where and when the noise occurs.
Our Environmental Health Officers can advise you about what noise regulations apply in your area.
What can be considered 'excessive noise' depends on the time of day and other circumstances. Deciding what is excessive is up to the officer.

Phone us for noise happening now

If you're being disturbed by noise in your neighbourhood that is occurring now, please phone us (24 hours / 7 days).

Things you should know before you call:

  • your name will not be given out
  • noise must be coming from a separate address to yours
  • noise rules do not apply to unplanned emergency works, like water mains breaks
  • we can investigate noise from parked cars on private property (alarms, car stereos and engine revving).

Report an issue

Alternatively, you can use our online form. We will respond to issues reported online outside of Council business hours (8:00am to 4:30pm) on the next working day.
We try to resolve all issues within 15 working days, though complex queries may take longer to address.
